Adaptive Reuse of St Anselm's Church

The church was left at a state that was not at all structurally and visually sound. The building closed down on 2018 and in 2023, subsequent to the deconsecration the community approached us to propose a new programmatic layout and provide drawings that would assist with the coordination of the building with engineers from various fields. While this project was outside our usual scope, we recognized the importance of revitalizing a space the community held in their heart. The experience from this project has taught us the most, not only about architecture but also about people of the Acadian community residing in Nova Scotia.

FACADE RESTORATION:

Our initial priority was addressing the safety of the brick structure, particularly the facade facing the water, which showed signs of deterioration with chipping bricks

due to weather exposure. To enhance safety and aesthetics, we restored the corners with granite quoins and converted the entry doors to curtainwall systems.

HALL CONVERSION:

In order to preserve the heritage aesthetics while removing all symbols of faith from the hall, we undertook a redesign of the space to make it suitable for hosting concerts and ceremonies. This involved new plumbing, ventilation systems, and a comprehensive commercial kitchen in the back room, along with rehearsal and restroom spaces
